2010 San Jose Sharks Summer Hockey School

 

The goal of the San Jose Sharks Summer Hockey School is to enhance player development through qualified, professional instuction and innovative, challenging programs.  The schools will focus on hockey fundamentals, skills, and tactics.  Our coaches and counselors will emphasize the importance of the characteristics the Sharks expect of their NHL stars.  A strong work ethic, teamwork, and sportsmanship will be encouraged.  The San Jose Sharks Summer Hockey School mandate is to provide development in an enthusiastic and fun atmosphere.

Featured Coach Roy Sommer - Head Coach, Worcester Sharks (AHL)

Coach Sommer plays a major role in developing players for the San Jose Sharks.  Sommer is currently the longest-tenured coach in the American Hockey League.  The native of Oakland, CA  returns for his tenth season behind the bench of San Jose's top development affiliate and his 12th season overall with the Sharks organization.  In his time as Head Coach of the Worcester Sharks, Sommer has coached 60+ players who have spent time in the National Hockey League including current Sharks Torrey Mitchell, Douglas Murray, Ryane Clowe, Jamie McGinn and Devon Setoguchi.

 

Coach David Cunniff - Assistant Coach, Worcester Sharks (AHL)

David Cunniff is in his eighth season as an assistant coach for the Worcester Sharks.  Cunniff plays an integral role in assisting Coach Roy Sommer in all duties including video breakdown, player assessment, and scouting.  Coach Cunniff runs numerous development camps for Sharks prospects during the summer, bringing a unique blend of experience and enthusiasm to the ice.  A former collegiate and professional player, this is Cunniff's sixth season with the Sharks Summer Hockey School.

 

Coach Derek Eisler - Director of Player Development, Sharks Ice

A former NHL, collegiate, and junior coach, Eisler has also served as the Director of Coaches for the San Jose Jr. Sharks.  He was also head coach of the China Sharks, developing players for the Chinese National Hockey Team.  Currently Eisler is responsible for developing key skill/fundamental training programs for players from Mite to Bantam at all Sharks Ice facilities.

 

Coach Mike Traggio - Assistant Coach, Hotchkiss School Boys Varsity Hockey

Mike Traggio has spent the last 7+ years as the Assistant Coach of the Boys Varsity hockey team and the Manager of the Mars Athletic Center at The Hotchkiss School, a college prepatory school located in the Northwest corner of Connecticut.  Many former players have gone on to play Div I/Div III college hockey, including the Sharks' Torrey Mitchell ('02-'04).  Prior to Hotchkiss, Traggio was the Director of Hockey at Sharks Ice where he played a significant role in the development of the Jr. Sharks Hockey Club, as well as the formation of the High School Hockey League.  Mike played one season of professional hockey in Italy and was also a four-year member of the Brown University Men's Hockey Team where he was First Team All-Ivy, First Team All ECAC, and team captain his senior season.

 

Webb Sommer - Athletic Trainer

NATA certified since 1990, Webb Sommer brings a wealth of experience to Sharks camps including experience as a trainer with the USA Olympic Training Center, the USA Inline Hockey Team, and the Springfield Falcons of the AHL.  Currently Sommer is the Head Athletic Trainer & Instructor at Peninsula High School in Washington.

FATHER/SON CAMP #1 - 3 Day Camp

June 11-13, 2010 - 6:00-7:30pm

$225 per pair, $75 per additional child

 

FATHER/SON CAMP #2 - 3 Day Camp

June 25-27, 2010 - 6:00-7:30pm

$225 per pair, $75 per additional skater

 

Celebrate Fathers' Day with this experience!  Coaches Sommer and Traggio and the rest of the Sharks Camp Staff will work with fathers and sons (or daughters) on skills development for all levels.  Individual and group drills will develop hockey skills, teamwork, and camaderie among dads and kids.  Due to popular demand, we are offering 2 sessions of this camp for 2010.

 

ADULT SKILLS CAMP - 5 Day Camp

June 14-18, 2010 - 6:30-8:00pm

$175 per person

Hockey is ageless and so is our Adult Skills Camp.  Coach Sommer and the rest of the Sharks Camp Staff will put you to the test with individual and team drills in addition to a full scrimmage.  Your hockey skills and fitness level will improve after participating in this camp.  The camp is geared towards intermediate level players.

 

SKILLS DEVELOPMENT CAMP WEEK 1 - 5 Day Camp

June 14-18, 2010 - Times based on age

Take your game to the next level as you train and develop with Coach Sommer.  Skills Development Camps are progressive in nature and are designed to enhance and improve hockey fundamentals, focused on skating, passing, shooting, and tactical play.  This full day of on-ice sessions, and dryland training will keep your child engaged and improving all day!  This camp is great for all ability levels, although mainly geared towards In-House and Travel players.  Daily scrimmages will prepare players for the Friday Scrimmage, where one team from each age group will be awarded the coveted "Cow Cup".  Parents are encouraged to attend this final scrimmage.

 

SKILLS DEVELOPMENT CAMP WEEK 2 - 5 Day Camp

June 21-25, 2010 - Times based on age

This camp is designed to reinforce and build on the basic skating, passing and shooting skills emphasized during the first week of Skills Development Camp.  Coach Sommer and his staff will also spend time on positioning.  Although this camp can be taken without taking the first week, this is a great compliment to the first week of Skills Development Camp.  Daily scrimmages will prepare players for the Friday Scrimmage, where one team from each age group will be awarded the coveted "Cow Cup".  Parents are encouraged to attend this final scrimmage.

 

 

SHARKS GOALTENDERS CLINIC - 5 Day Camp

June 28-July 2, 2010 - times based on age (see below)

$250 per week

This camp, scheduled to be run by Tony Zasowski, features intense on and off ice training designed specifically for goaltenders.  This camp offers a low ratio of coaches and shooters to goaltenders to ensure individual attention and coaching.  This camp is designed for Travel and In-House level players.  Goalies will receive 1.5 hours of on-ice instruction, and 1.25 hours of dryland/off-ice training per day.

9:45am-11:00am  Off-Ice

 

Bantam, Midget, Adult

12:45pm-2:15pm  On-Ice

SHARKS EXTENDED DEVELOPMENT CLINICS

These clinics are designed to be taken together as a third week of Skills Development camps, or individually to focus on specific skills.  Players that enroll in all 4 of these clinics will have a lunch session from 12:30-1:30 and a dryland session from 1:30-2:30pm and will be supervised by counselors between sessions.  These clinics are all designed for players with a birth year of 1999 & older and geared towards In-House and Travel A/B players.  Clinics will be limited to 40 skaters.

 

Checking Clinic

June 28-July 2, 2010 - 9:45am-11:00am

$155 per week*

This clinic, scheduled to be run by Sean Castagna, teaches the skills of giving and receiving checks safely, the purpose of the skill, and puck protection while checking.

 

Power Skating Clinic
June 28-July 2, 2010 - 11:15am-12:30pm

$155 per week*

This clinic will develop power through edgework and skating skills.  This skating-only camp will leave your child with lasting techniques to build upon.

 

Playing Without The Puck Clinic

June 28-July 2, 2010 - 2:30pm-3:45pm

$155 per week*

This clinic, scheduled to be run by Jamie Baker will focus on the importance of positioning for offensive and defensive play.  97% of the game is played without posession of the puck.  Controlled scrimmages will be used to work on positioning.

 

Scrimmage/Small Games Clinic

June 28-July 2, 2010 - 4:00pm-5:15pm

$155 per week*

This clinic, scheduled to be run by Jamie Baker, will emphasize scrimmage and small games.  Cross-ice, full-ice, 3-3 games and other variations will be used as tools for players to develop their scrimmage skills.

 

*Discount price of $550 for players that register for all 4 Clinics.  The "All Day" price includes dryland and supervision inbetween on-ice sessions at no additional cost.

 

 

Full gear is required for participation in all camps including helmet with face cage, mouthpiece, shoulder pads, elbow pads, gloves, hockey pants, shin guards, protective cup, ice hockey skates, and stick.  Water bottles clearly labled with participants' names are strongly recommended.  Athletic clothes and shoes are required for camps that include dryland training.

 

Registration is based on a first come-first serve basis.  Participation in previous years of camp does not guarantee a spot.  Waiting lists will be kept for all camps and clinics.  If you wish to enroll in a camp or clinic that is already full, please email your name, desired camp/clinic, and contact information to mtaylor@sharksice.com .  You will be notified if/when a space becomes available.

 

The San Jose Sharks Summer Hockey School reserves the right to move attendees to the category deemed most appropriate for the participants' size and skill level.  If you would like to skate outside of your age division, please speak with your coach (in-house, travel, or private lesson coach) first for their recommendation.

 

Refunds will not be given for camp/clinic enrollments.  If a player is unable to attend the camp for medical reasons, please submit your request in writing to mtaylor@sharksice.com for consideration.
