2012 San Jose Sharks Summer Hockey Schools

 

The goal of the San Jose Sharks Summer Hockey Schools is to enhance player development through qualified, professional instruction and innovative, challenging programs.  The schools will forus on hockey fundamentals, skills, and tactics.  Our coaches and counselors will emphasize the importance of the characteristics the Sharks expect of their NHL stars.  A strong work ethic, teamwork, and sportsmanship will be encouraged.  The San Jose Sharks Summer Hockey School mandate is to provide development in an enthusiastic and fun atmosphere.

Father/Son Camp
 Coaches Sommer, Cunniff, Traggio and the rest of the Sharks Camp Staff will work with fathers and sons (or daughters!) on skill development for all levels.  Individual and group drills will be used to develop hockey skills, teamwork, and camaraderie among dads and kids.  Limited to 40 skaters per session.  Camp enrollment includes a jersey for each participant.
Session 1: June 8-10, 2012 - 6:00-7:30pm

Adult Skills Camp
 Hockey is ageless and so is our Adult Skills Camp.  Coaches Sommer, Cunniff, Traggio and the rest of the Sharks Camp Staff will put you to the test with individual and team drills in addition to a full scrimmage.  Your hockey skills and fitness level will improve after participating in this camp.  The camp is geared towards intermediate level players.   Limited to 38 skaters and 2 goalies.  Camp enrollment includes a jersey for each participant.

Skills Development Camp Weeks 1 & 2
 Take your game to the next level as you train and develop with Coaches Sommer, Cunniff, Eisler, Traggio (Week 1), Brown (Week 2) and the rest of our Sharks Camp Staff.  Skills Development Camps are progressive in nature and are designed to enhance and improve hockey fundamentals focused on skating, passing, shooting, and tactical play.  This full day of on-ice sessions and dryland training will keep your child engaged and improving all day!  This camp is great for all ability levels, although mostly geared towards In-House and Travel players.  Daily scrimmages will prepare players for the Friday Scrimmage, where one team from each age group will be awarded the coveted "Cow Cup".  Parents are encouraged to attend this final scrimmage.  Camp enrollment includes one jersey and one t-shirt for each participant.  Limited to 40 participants per age group

Sharks Goaltenders Clinic
 This clinic features intense on and off ice training designed specifically for goaltenders and is run in conjunction with the Sharks Shooting Clinic.  This camp offers a low ratio of coaches and shooters to goaltenders to ensure individual attention and coaching.  This camp is desigend for Travel and In-House level players.  Goalies will receive 1.5 hours of on-ice instruction and 1 hour of dryland/off-ice training per day.  Limited to 20 goalies per group.  Camp enrollment includes one jersey and one t-shirt for each participant
Sharks Shooting Clinic - NEW for 2012!
 This clinic features 7.5 hours of ice time in 5 days.  Run in conjunction with the Sharks Goaltenders Clinic, shooters will be instructed on technique, power, weight transfer, shooting lanes and all types of shots.  Shooters will receive 1.5 hours of on-ice instruction and 1 hour of dryland/off-ice training per day.  This clinic is designed for Travel and In House level players.  Camp enrollment includes one jersey and one t-shirt for each participant

Sharks Extended Development Camp
 The Sharks Extended Development Camp is designed to help skaters focus on specific skills in a clinic-style day.  Checking will focus on the skills of giving and receiving checks safely, the purpose of the skill, and puck protection while checking.  Power Skating will focus on power through edgework and skating skills.  Curtis Brown will work wiht players in the afternoon focusing on positioning for offensive and defensive play.  Controlled scrimmages, cross-ice, full-ice, 3-3 games and other variations will be used as tools for players to develop their scrimmage skills.  This camp is designed for second year Peewees and first year Bantams and geared towards In-House and Travel A/B players.  Priority will be given to age and level appropriate players.  Extended Development Camp will be limited to 40 skaters on a first come, first serve basis.  Camp enrollment includes one jersey and one t-shirt for each participant.

Sharks Fundamentals Camp - NEW for 2012!
Former Sharks Players Curtis Brown and Jonathan Cheechoo will emphasize hockey fundamentals, focused on skating, passing, shooting and tactical play.  Current Sharks Trainer Mike Potenza will run off-ice training focusing on endurance, agility and fitness.  Camp participants will be seperated by age group (Peewee, Squirt, Bantam).  This camp is geared towards In-House and Travel players.  Space is limited to 36 skaters and 4 goalies per age group.  Camp enrollment includes one jersey and one t-shirt for each participant.

Adult Boot Camp - NEW for 2012!
Former Sharks Player Curtis Brown will run a 5 day version of his popular weekly Boot Camp.  Brown will fun individual and team drills in addition to a full scrimmage.  Your hockey skills and fitness level will improve after participating in this camp.  This camp is geared towards intermediate level players.  Camp enrollment includes a jersey for each participant.  Limited to the first 30 skaters and 4 goalies.

COACH ROY SOMMER - HEAD COACH WORCESTER SHARKS (AHL)
Skills Development Camp Weeks 1 & 2
Coach Roy Sommer plays a major role in developing players for the San Jose Sharks.  Sommer is currently the longest tenured coach in the American Hockey League.  The native of Oakland, CA  returns for his 14th season behind the bench of San Jose's top development affiliate and his 16th season overall with the Sharks Organization.  Last season, Sommer became just the fourth coach in AHL History to reach 1,000 games after a 3-1 victory at Springfield on January 14, 2011.  In his time as Head Coach of the Worcester Sharks sommer has coached 60+ players who have spent time in the National Hockey League including current Sharks Torrey Mitchell, Douglas Murray, Ryane Clowe, Jamie McGinn, Logan Couture, Justin Braun, Jason Demers and Frazer McLaren.

COACH DAVID CUNNIFF - ASSISTANT COACH WORCESTER SHARKS (AHL)
Skills Development Camp Weeks 1 & 2
David Cunniff is in his tenth season as an assistant coach for the Worcester Sharks.  Cunniff plays an integral role in assisting Coach Roy Sommer in all duties including video breakdown, player assessment and scouting.  His presence was pivotal in the rapid development of several defensemen including Douglas Murray, Jason Demers and Justin Braun.  Coach Cunniff runs numerous development camps for Sharks prospects during the summer, bringing a unique blend of experience and enthusiasm to the ice.  A former collegiate and professional player, this is Cunniff's ninth season with the Sharks Summer Hockey School.

COACH MIKE TRAGGIO - ASSISTANT COACH HOTCHKISS SCHOOL BOYS VARSITY HOCKEY

Mike Traggio has spent the last 9+ years as the Assistant Coach of the Boys Varsity hockey team and the Manager of the Mars Athletic Center at The Hotchkiss School, a prepatory school located in the Northwest corner of Connecticut.  Many former players have gone on to play Div I/Div III College Hockey including the Sharks Torrey Mitchell ('02-'04).  Prior to Hotchkiss, Traggio was the Director of Hockey at Sharks Ice where he played a significant role in the development of the Jr. Sharks Hockey Club, as well as the formation of the High School Hockey League.  Traggio played professional hockey in Italy and was also a four year member of the Brown University Men's Hockey Team where he was First Team All-Ivy, First Team All ECAC, and team captain his senior season.

COACH DEREK EISLER
Skills Development Camp Week 1 & 2
A former NHL, collegiate and junior coach, Eisler has also served as the Director of Coaches for the San Jose Jr. Sharks.  He was also head coach of the China Sharks, developing players for the Chinese National Hockey Team.  Eisler also spent several seasons developing key skill/fundamental training programs for players from Mite to Bantam at all Sharks Ice facilities.

Curtis Brown, a native of Saskatchewan, began his hockey career in the Western Hockey League (WHL) in 1992.  In 1994 he was drafted by the Buffalo Sabres where he played until 2004 when he was traded to the San Jose Sharks mid-season.  Brown signed as a free agent with the Chicago Blackhawks in July of 2004 where he played until the conclusion of the 2005-06 season when he signed again with the San Jose Sharks for 2 years.  Most recently, Brown played for the EHC Biel of Switzerland's top league, the NLA.  Brown and his wife, Ami, have 3 sons: Gage, Garrett and Griffin.

COACH JONATHAN CHEECHOO - FORMER SAN JOSE SHARKS PLAYER
Sharks Fundamentals Camp
Jonathan Cheechoo was selected in the second round (29th overall) of the 1998 NHL Entry Draft.  He received the Maurice "Rocket" Richard Trophy in teh 2005-06 season when he led the NHL with a career high 56 goals.  He also led the NHL in divisional goals, game-winning goals, and home goals.  In 2010-11 Cheechoo led the Worcester Sharks with 47 points in 55 games and was named a starter in the 2011 AHL All Star Game.  Cheechoo currently plays for the St. Louis Blues organization.  This is Cheechoo's first season coaching Sharks Summer Hockey Schools after many years of visiting the summer program during his playing time in San Jose.

WEBB SOMMER - ATHLETIC TRAINER
Skills Development Camp Weeks 1 & 2
NATA certified since 1990, Webb Sommer brings a wealth of experience to Sharks camps including experience as a trainer with the USA Olympic Training Center, the USA Inline Hockey Team and the Springfield Falcons of the AHL.  Currently Sommer is the Head Athletic Trainer & Instructor at Peninsula High School in Washington.

MIKE POTENZA - SHARKS STRENGTH & CONDITIONING TRAINER
Sharks Fundamentals Camp 
Mike Potenza is in his 6th season with the San Jose Sharks as the Strength and Conditioning Coordinator.  Potenza is responsible for the teams overall strength and conditioning programs including the physical testing and evaluation at training camp, creation of individualized posteseason workout programs and assistance in the rehabilitation efforts for all injured players.  Potenza has a bachelor of science degree in applied exercise science and a master's degree in human movement science.  Potenza was part of the evaluation staff for the U.S. World Junior Hockey Team that competed at the 2008 World Junior Championships in the Czech Republic.  This is Potenza's first year with the Sharks Summer Hockey School



 

 

Full gear is required for participation in all camps including helmet with face cage, mouthpiece, shoulder pads, elbow pads, gloves, hockey pants, shin guards, protective cup, ice hockey skates, and stick.  Water bottles clearly labled with participants' names are strongly recommended.  Athletic clothes and shoes are required for camps that include dryland training.

 

Registration is based on a first come-first serve basis.  Participation in previous years of camp does not guarantee a spot.  Waiting lists will be kept for all camps and clinics.  If you wish to enroll in a camp or clinic that is already full, please email your name, desired camp/clinic, and contact information to mtaylor@sharksice.com .  You will be notified if/when a space becomes available.

 

The San Jose Sharks Summer Hockey School reserves the right to move attendees to the category deemed most appropriate for the participants' size and skill level.  If you would like to skate outside of your age division, please speak with your coach (in-house, travel, or private lesson coach) first for their recommendation.

 

Refunds will not be given for camp/clinic enrollments.  If a player is unable to attend the camp for medical reasons, please submit your request in writing to mtaylor@sharksice.com for consideration.
