Sharks High School Hockey League

Sharks Ice is proud to bring you the 17th year of the Sharks High School Hockey League, the premier high school league in Northern California, for the 2016-17 season. In its first year of existence, the Sharks High School Ice Hockey League began with just four teams. For the 2015-2016 season, 29 teams were fielded with players from all over the Bay Area from as far north as Santa Rosa, Monterey to the south, Stockton to the east and Santa Cruz to the west.

The Sharks High School Hockey League operates the Junior Varsity (Fall-Winter) and Varsity (Spring) leagues. Unlike traditional high school sports where Junior Varsity and Varsity are predominantly decided by age, our divisions are exclusively decided by skill level.

The Junior Varsity division will be made up of recreational/in-house/travel level players that will be separated into three subdivisions based on skill with the most novice level being non-check. The Junior Varsity (JV) season runs early October through roughly mid-March while the Varsity season runs mid/late March through early June.

The Varsity division conducts tryouts that are available to JVA, Travel, and Tier players; not all players are guaranteed a position following tryouts. The Varsity season runs mid/late March through early June.

With more and more kids playing ice hockey, Sharks Ice can now form teams made up solely of one school or geographical area. All players need to be enrolled in high school in Northern California. They also must provide all of their own HECC approved equipment. Practices and games will take place at Sharks Ice San Jose, Sharks Ice at Fremont, and at the Oakland Ice Center. Most games will take place on the weekends with an occasional game played mid-week. No matter what your skill level is, there is a spot for you in the Sharks High School Hockey League.

General Information

Sharks High School Hockey League
Junior Varsity

The Junior Varsity season, which runs late September through March, starts with approximately three evaluation sessions in which Sharks Ice Staff Coaches observe players to determine which of our divisions suits them best. The JV league is made up of divisions: JV-A, JV-B and JV-C. JV-A and JV-B are full check while JV-C is non-check for more novice players. The three divisions allow Sharks Ice to form teams in appropriate skill levels to create a competitive and fun atmosphere for all. Sharks Ice also looks to collaborate schools from the same geographical area to form teams. Teams based out of Sharks Ice San Jose will have practice start times that vary between 3:45 and 4:15pm weekdays. Most games will be played on weekends, with an occasional weeknight game. Teams from San Jose will play a majority of games in San Jose with the possibility of 3-4 games at Solar4America at Fremont and/or Oakland Ice Center.

NORCAL High School Hockey League

The 2016-17 season will be the inaugural season of the NORCAL High School Hockey League, operating by the Northern California Junior Hockey Association. Fielding teams in three different skill divisions, the NORCAL High School Hockey League will act as a replacement for Midget 16A and 18A hockey in Northern California. AA & AAA hockey will not be affected. The league will run early October to mid-March.

Summer Programs

Please see the list below for a summary and information regarding our summer programs.

S.A.T League

May to Late June

The S.A.T. league is geared towards novice to intermediate Junior Varsity skill level players and is non-check. The goal of the S.A.T. League is to allow players to develop their individual skills without the fear of getting checked. In addition, players will learn positional play and team concepts. This is a perfect opportunity for those who are getting into the game of hockey or for those who want to sharpen their skills in a fun, safe, and relaxed atmosphere. Teams are drafted after evaluation sessions in order to create a good level of parity in the league.

High School Summer Skills Series

Late June to Late August

The Summer Skills Series is a set of practices aimed towards Junior Varsity skill-level players and is open to incoming freshman through graduating seniors. Sessions will be fast paced in tempo, with group/station drills to maintain a proper work-to-rest ratio. Emphasis will be on individual skill development (skating, passing, shooting, puck handling.) In addition to drills, small area games will be included at the end of each practice to promote quick thinking, rapid skill development, as well as create a positive learning environment.

Junior Varsity Training Camp

Early September to Late September

JV Training camp is a great way for players to shake off the summer rust! This camp runs twice a week for four weeks with both an on ice session and a dryland workout in the Sharks Ice gym. On ice, players will work on individual skills along with situational play (1v1, 2v2 etc.) to get them ready for the upcoming JV Season.
