Visitors to Sharks Ice San Jose now have a new way to enjoy the facility beyond the rink. A newly installed Little Free Library is now available for guests, providing free access to books for readers of all ages.

The Little Free Library was made possible through a partnership between the Reading is Cool program powered by the Sharks Foundation and Baker Elementary. Students from Baker Elementary’s 2nd grade class helped bring the project to life by painting the unfinished library as a class, creating a unique addition that reflects the creativity and spirit of the San Jose community.

As part of the project, students from Baker Elementary visited Sharks Ice San Jose to see their artwork installed and enjoy a day at the rink. Following the painting activity, students had the opportunity to skate on the ice, creating a memorable experience that combined creativity, literacy, and recreation.

Located at Sharks Ice San Jose, the Little Free Library encourages guests to browse the selection, borrow a book to enjoy, or donate a book for another reader to discover. The installation supports the Sharks Foundation’s commitment to youth education and expanding access to books throughout the Bay Area. By placing Little Free Libraries in community spaces, the program aims to make reading more accessible while encouraging lifelong learning both on and off the ice.

“Reading is Cool is about helping young people discover a love of reading, and these Little Free Libraries are a great example of how that mission can extend beyond the classroom,” said Kevin Brown, Executive Director of the Sharks Foundation and Head of Community Impact for Sharks Sports & Entertainment. “We’re proud that students have had a hand in creating something that will provide access to books and encourage reading throughout our community.”

The Sharks Foundation’s Reading is Cool program has inspired thousands of students across Northern California through literacy-focused initiatives that encourage a love of reading. The addition of the Little Free Library at Sharks Ice San Jose, Sharks Ice Fremont, and Sharks Ice Oakland, extends that mission beyond the classroom and into the community.
